cities

Johannesburg

The theme for December’s edition is cities.

cities are centres of population, commerce and culture. They contain people and cars and creators and are also contained in people and cars and creators. They house opportunities, real and imagined, reflected in the steady march of migration rural-to-urban and back again. Cities are the heartbeat and arteries of nations.

cities are extreme. Wealth, poverty, excess, shortages, people, houses, waste, water, food. And so with all the opportunities come a range of challenges. What is special about the African city? What do cities as organisational structures have to offer the continent? And what is their future? Who do they leave behind?

The deadline for submission to the cities edition is: 22 December 2011
